A city built on the rocks called ‘Sassi’. Matera, the Sustainable City of Stone, is an educational open museum on sustainable practices and urban ecology.
Matera was a largely self-sufficient settlement beyond the Middle Ages, which grew its own food supply. Waste, wastewater and manure were recycled.
Some urban practices are reusable today while others failed in the face of population expansion showing us that a sustainable model must be resilient in order to stand the test of time.
Matera is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and European Capital of Culture 2019.
