During the week, the beach of Qurum in Muscat (Oman) transforms into a cacophony of football excitement before 4pm.
Some teams are formed on-the-spot with available players, while other groups troop in together to play. Doctors, engineers, pilots, students, and retirees, bring their own footballs and refreshments to share. For a few short hours, all that matters is the game.
In a city with little offer for outdoor sports and where people have to massively use the car to move around, this is a good way to keep fit. Age doesn’t matter on the field.
Players hope the officials will allow them to continue to play at the beaches. Sports do many good things to the society. It also helps youngsters keep away from drugs and other unlawful activities.
