Munich is deploying free bicycle pumps and bicycle service stations equipped with tools around the city, especially at underground and bike-sharing stations, on busy bicycle routes and larger bicycle parking facilities. Cyclists can inflate their bicycle tyres and carry out minor maintenance and repairs.
The city wants to offer cyclists more comfort and safety. Cycling performance is significantly affected by too little air in the tires making it more strenuous. Correctly inflated tyres will roll faster.
Moreover, this initiative well supports the idea of a sharing city, where tools are shared among citizens. These big air pumps allow people to easily get the pressure they need on the road.
If we cities want to improve their air quality, they have to start making things much easier for cyclists.
