What is a ‘pfand’ bottle?
It is a reusable bottle. In Germany you pay for a drink in a bottle or can an additional amount for the container (glass, plastic or even an aluminium can). Once you bring the bottle back to the shop, you get your money back.
In some German cities some needy people try to make a living by looking for ‘pfand’ bottles on the street that people, who don’t bother about the money, through away.
In the city of Berlin they have located bottle holders closed to the rubbish bins where you can leave a ‘pfand’ bottle if you don’t want to bring it back to the shop. Somebody will do it for you.
It is a smart way of avoiding waste and helping needy people at the same time.
