StadtLesen: A Mobile Reading Room For Culture In Cities

StadtLesen: a mobile reading room for culture in cities

“Reading is the world in the head” is Sebastian Mettler’s motto. He has founded StadtLesen 10 years ago in Austria. Every year StadtLesen travels to many different cities in Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

His initiative has given citizens reading enjoyment al fresco in cities with free admission. More than 100 publishers are involved in this program. Meaning that visitors can read more than 3000 books for free.

He provides easy access to books. Citizens can grab a book from the book tower and make themselves comfortable on one of the beanbags, hammocks, stools and chairs and dive into literary worlds from 9 am until sunset.

Odeonsplatz turns into a reading oasis

Visitors indulge their desire to read in the mobile reading room, choose a book from the book towers, sit down on comfortable reading furniture and read, listen, immerse, linger – give in to their imagination.

City reading is unspectacularly spectacular, unobtrusively penetrating. The visitors have time to read, to fantasise. The project promotes healthy boredom, awakens the often lost imagination.

Sebastian Mettler’s endeavours to provide reading enjoyment in the world and give people access to books. He started his first City Reading Tour in Austria. “The rest is a fine story”.
