Grassroots Wildlife Conservation in Cities

This series explores and showcases individuals engaged in grassroots wildlife conservation in their cities to foster similar efforts in urban areas around the world

Grassroots Wildlife Conservation in Cities

This series was inspired by the story of Kersti Muul and Brittany Philbin, who founded the WhatsApp group Salish Wildlife Watch with over 6,000 followers to alert conservationists when whales are cruising by their city: The Whale Guardians of Seattle

Today, 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas, a proportion that is expected to increase to 68% by 2050. Focused on raising awareness, this series showcases the potential of grassroots wildlife conservation in urban areas — proving that city dwellers worldwide can start their own. These local stories should also reconnect urban dwellers to nature, revitalize urban biodiversity, and highlight the importance of urban coexistence with wildlife.

Are you down to be a background source for a story about coexistence with wildlife in your city or another urban area? Do You Have a Tip for The Urban Activist? Help us discover more grassroots efforts in urban areas. Whether it’s leopards in Mumbai, giraffes in Nairobi, tanuki in Tokyo, or foxes in London, we want to hear from you.
