Our event “The Urban Activist, Not just Dreamers but Doers” at the 12th World Urban Forum, Cairo, Egypt

We gave the podium to local grassroots activists from Cairo, Nairobi, and Ghana, who are remarkably taking on the problem of mounting waste while transforming their communities into green, resilient and thriving societies.

Watch this video that we played at the event to know more about the work of these activists.

In our panel The Urban Activist, Not Just Dreamers but Doers, the panelists discussed how city administrations could embrace their local actions. Policymakers have attempted to leverage informal waste collection to increase recycling rates. But progress is slow. Informal workers, who pick valuable waste from households and clean streets or urban rivers, remain in the shadows. Yet they are on the front line of the environmental fight – with tangible solutions while empowering the most marginalized members of society.

The Urban Activist is not only shedding light on critical issues with its reporting, prompting policy changes, but also facilitating bridge the gap between these grassroots activists, advocates, policymakers, city officials, and decision-makers so that they can find common ground for collaboration. These local initiatives represent an immense opportunity to create local green economies that benefit all.
